Deputy Donald DeMeulle was killed when the helicopter he was riding in crashed into Silverwood Lake. The helicopter became entangled in high-powered power lines and fell into the lake. Deputy DeMeulle sustained severe head injuries and was trapped in the helicopter as it became submerged. The pilot, who suffered a broken back, made several heroic attempts to dive into the water and free Deputy DeMeulle's seatbelt.

FROM THE CHINO VALLEY CHAMPION:

Dep. DeMeulle had just been appointed to Local Advisory Commission County Service Area 19 (CSA 19) in Chino Hills, which governed the Glenmeade area for decades prior to the city's incorporation in 1991.

He served on CSA 19 for two to three months before the accident.  Upon his death, commissioners held a ceremony for him at Hickory Creek Park, erected a plaque that was embedded in a concrete monument, and planted a tree in his honor.
