Your Disability Benefits: What SEBA Members Need to Know

If you're part of a San Bernardino County bargaining unit, short-term and long-term disability coverage is available to you. These benefits are designed to support you when illness or injury prevents you from working, helping to ease the financial burden during difficult times.

At SEBA, we want to make sure our members understand how these resources work and who to contact if you ever need them. Here's a breakdown of how these benefits can protect your income and peace of mind:

Short-Term Disability (STD)
When you’re temporarily unable to work, STD coverage helps keep your finances stable while you recover.

  • Duration: Covers you for a few weeks up to 3–6 months

  • Coverage: Pays a percentage of your salary

  • Eligibility: Covers temporary conditions like injuries, surgeries, pregnancy, or short-term illness

  • Waiting Period: Benefits usually begin after a few days to a week

  • Purpose: To provide temporary income replacement while you get back on your feet

Long-Term Disability (LTD)
If you’re facing a serious or lasting medical condition, LTD coverage kicks in after STD ends to provide long-term financial support.

  • Duration: Starts after 3–6 months and can last for years or longer

  • Coverage: Pays a portion of your salary for the long haul

  • Eligibility: For chronic or severe conditions, including permanent injuries or disabilities

  • Waiting Period: Benefits typically begin 30 to 180 days after your last day worked

  • Purpose: To provide sustained income support if you’re unable to return to work
