Russell Roberts
Deputy Russell Dean Roberts was killed in the line of duty on September 16, 1995, when he was struck while doing a follow-up vehicle collision investigation. Russ was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A former military policeman, Russ joined the Needles Police Department in 1989. He became a deputy six months later when the city began contracting for law enforcement services with the department. Russ is survived by his wife, Carol, and sons, Benjamin, and Trevor.
On March 31, 2011, a portion of Needles Highway (River Road) from Park Road north of Sherman Way was dedicated to Russ.
“Russell never had a mean word to say about anyone: those he worked with, those he worked for, and those he arrested. He never complained about his assignments, just did them to the best of his ability. He never was afraid to ask questions, take constructive criticism or learn from his mistakes.”
“Russ was a great father and husband. He deeply cared for his family and his community. Those of us that knew Russ were incredibly lucky to have him in our lives.”
Shortly after the countywide peace officer memorial in May 2023, SEBA joined members of the Sheriff's Honor Guard as they embarked on a mission across the county. Their goal? To draw attention to specific monuments dedicated to their fallen brothers.
