SEBA Monthly Newsletter - June 2022

SHERIFF'S EMPLOYEES' BENEFIT ASSOCIATION

Member Spotlight: Ellen Monsalve

Ellen Monsalve is this month’s SEBA member Spotlight, as we wish her well in her new chapter of retirement. It is with varied emotions we bid farewell to SEBA Executive Assistant Ellen Monsalve. On the one hand, we are so excited for her to enjoy her well-warned retirement after 30 years of dedicated service to SEBA. But on the other hand, we are sad to see her go.

We will miss her cheery disposition, her work ethic and her consistent, understated leadership. She has been part of the backbone of this association for three decades and we will miss her dearly. Lucky for us, we’ve convinced her to share her expertise in a consultant role as we continue to push forward with new programs and systems, designed to more efficiently serve our membership.

We couldn’t quit Ellen cold turkey and experience like hers cannot be replaced overnight. We are so grateful for her genuine passion to serve SEBA members and for her relentless effort to constantly improve all aspects of SEBA services.

Words cannot adequately convey the legacy Ellen has left as she departs but her vast accomplishments inspire us all to work diligently in genuine service to the quality of life for all SEBA members.

SEBA Executive Director Lolita Harper narrates in the above video which is dedicated to our fallen, Sgt. Dominic Vaca and Detective Armando Cantu.

Honoring our Fallen and their Families

This is what love looks like. In the middle of our nation’s Capitol thousands of people gathered to pour love out onto the families of our fallen officers. Last month, SEBA traveled to Washington DC to honor our fallen, Sgt. Dominic Vaca and Detective Armando Cantu. And to support their families.

Red roses were given to the wives, husbands, children and parents of the men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. The roses symbolized an emotion not often associated with law enforcement: LOVE.

SEBA was also honored to have partnered with the Sheriff's Department to help honor our fallen heroes and their families.

Learn more in the above video about the monument that will stand for years to come as a reminder of their ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget.

Information Regarding Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL)

Department vehicles outfitted with MDCs are equipped with a system designed to track the vehicle's location, as well as a Telematic system that collects specific vehicle data. SEBA met with the Office of the Sheriff to discuss the usage of this technology and how it might affect SEBA members. The following assurances were given by the Office of the Sheriff regarding use of the AVL and Telematic systems.

What you need to know:

The Telematic system data may not be accessed without cause. Sheriff’s Dispatch may only access the system to assist in dispatching the closest deputy to the scene of an emergency call, or if exigent circumstances exist. Sergeants and/or dispatch cannot randomly look at the data just to see where deputies are located. There must be a priority call.

Access to historical data may be obtained by a station/division commander (or above) during a criminal or administrative investigation, and said requests are recorded within the system to ensure only those with proper clearance gain access.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, please call Labor Relations Manager Nancy Tate at (909) 885-6074.
